End of life directive

Ivor Thomas and Sons are a fully licensed Authorised Treatment Facility capable of recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELV’s).

An ELV is a vehicle that has come to the end of its useful life. ELV’s can be broken down into two categories, namely, natural and premature ELV’s. A natural ELV is a vehicle that has come to the end of its life due to natural factors. These vehicles are typically over 10 years old. A premature ELV is a damaged vehicle that is uneconomical to repair

ELV owners are responsible for ensuring that their vehicles are disposed of in accordance with the European ELV Directive. In order to ensure this these vehicles must be disposed of at an Authorised Treatment Facility such as Ivor Thomas and Sons.

We issue a Certificate of Destruction obtained from the Department of the Environment for every vehicle recycled on its premises. This certificate ensures that once a vehicle is processed it is de-registered and no longer the responsibility of the vehicle’s owner.

Once a Certificate of Destruction is issued on a vehicle that vehicle can then be de-polluted. This process involves the removal of all hazardous fluids such as brake fluid, oil, coolant and fuel. These fluids are then separated and sent to authorised facilities for optimal recycling.

The final step of the process involves the removal of all other hazardous materials including tyres, batteries, catalytic converters and air bags which are then recycled according to the ELV directive.

Once all the hazardous material is removed the vehicle is then sent to the crusher where the vehicle is baled and ready for further recycling.
